WEST VIRGINIA SHERATON SIDEBOARD - Probably Jefferson or Berkeley County, 1810-1820, mahogany and pine. Bowed center with a drawer over doors, flanked by doors, resting on six turned legs. 39.5? h., ? 71.5? w., 22.5? d. Based on the note, the original owner was James Tully Coyle Sr. (1762-1842) of Berkeley County, Virginia (what is now the Eastern Panhandle of West Virginia). He married Elizabeth Howard (1776-1850). Upon James Sr.?s death (the note is wrong on his date of death), the sideboard remained in the home he shared with Elizabeth. Elizabeth appears to have remarried, likely moved into her husband?s home, and at that point, the sideboard went to James Tully Coyle Jr. (1819-1877), who moved about in Virginia (and what is now West Virginia) and Maryland, ultimately settling in Jackson County, Ohio (by 1854). Most likely, before heading west to Ohio, James Jr. passed the sideboard to his nephew, George Fayette Coyle (1852-1937), the seventh child of James?s older brother Edward Violette Coyle (1800-1890) of Jefferson and Berkeley Counties. And from George, the sideboard passed to his son, George Lacy Coyle (1890-1963), and thence to the current owner. Condition: Refinished. Replaced pulls in secondary holes, numerous minor losses to veneer and cock beading.
