PORTRAIT OF HUNGARIAN ATTORNEY LAJOS KOSSUTH - Probably painted in Ohio, oil on canvas, c. 1852. Oval portrait of Kossuth in uniform. In its original frame. 26” high, 21” wide (sight); 35” high, 31” wide (overall). Kossuth was a Hungarian lawyer andpolitician who was one of the leaders of the 1848 Hungarian Revolt. When defeat at the hands of Russia was imminent in 1851, Kossuth fled to the US and visited Cleveland. There he impressed with his oratory, and it was also likely there that this portrait was painted. Condition: Frame damage, gesso loss, cracking, painting needs cleaned, craqeluer throughout, some paint loss, 2 minor canvas holes in left side of jacket.
