PORTRAIT OF A JUDGE - America, 2nd quarter-19th century, oil on canvas. Portrait of a stern gentleman in black. In a period/original black-painted frame. 28.5” high, 23” wide (sight); 34.25” high, 28.75” wide (overall). The judge is believed to be Ohio Supreme Court Justice Elijah Hayward (1786-1864). He served a mere 10 months on the Ohio Supreme Court and was better known as a newspaper editor and the state librarian. Condition: Restretched but does not appear to have been lined.
