PORTRAIT OF MAJ. GEN. JOSEPH HOOKER BY SILAS MARTIN (OHIO, 1841-1906) - Oil on canvas, signed upper left. Half-length portrait of ”Fighting Joe” in uniform. Unframed, 27” high, 22” wide. After much success in the Seminole and Mexican Wars, Hooker joined the Union Army as a brigadier general, and after more success (Antietam and Fredericksburg), he was placed in command of the Army of the Potomac. His disastrous loss at Chancellorsville eventually resulted in George Meade replacing him just before Gettysburg. Condition: Small puncture, and a couple of minor repairs. UPDATE: damage is visible in the photos; blacklight revealed a couple of minor (and old) repairs, one on his cheek, but they are not very visible to the naked eye.
