PORTRAITS OF AN OHIO COUPLE BY FRANCIS SALLAS (OHIO, ACT. C. 1830)
Warren or Hamilton County, Ohio, pencil and chalk. Signed and dated 1830 on the reverse of one. Profile portraits of this handsome couple, she is wearing a horn comb in her hair. 9" high, 7" wide (sight), 17" high, 15" wide (overall). By tradition, the couple has been identified as Samuel and Margaret Smith. Geneaological research has identified multiple Samuel and Margaret Smiths of the right age and in the right place. These portraits are illustrated and discussed in Kern and Warwick, "Four Ohio Nineteenth-Century Folk Artists, " in Magazine Antiques, August 2007.
Condition: Very light toning, minor losses. UPDATE: he has a small hole in the upper left, and a water stain in the upper right. There is a faint ghost of a fold line across his cheek (no visible color loss).
