SCHOOLMASTER'S DESK - American, 1820-1840, pine. Dovetailed gallery, one drawer, and turned legs; the interior with drawers and cubbies. Retains its original red paint. 39.5” high, 35.5” wide, 23.75” deep; top surface is 8” deep. Retains various period inscriptions on the inside lid from the Tate family. Snyder Tate was born in Centre County, Pennsylvania, in 1860, to Foster Tate and Elizabeth Hafer. He married Rebecca Jane Garbrick in 1896, and they had two children whose information seems to be recorded on this desk. Olive Tate, born 1897, and Donald Clarence, who was born in October of 1899, and died in May of the following year. Snyder died in 1918, Rebecca died in 1922, and Olive married Ralph Malone and remained in Bellefonte in Centre County, where she died in 1975.Provenance: From an Idaho Collection Condition: Period or original pulls, some wear.
