PAINT-DECORATED PIE OR FOOD SAFE
Michigan, 3rd quarter-19th century, poplar. Twelve star-punched tins, and the case retaining its original and unsual yellow and green stamped decoration. 59.5" high, 42" wide, 17.75" deep. This safe was collected by Peg and Larry Rasey in the 1950s in White Cloud, Michigan from a lady who had acquired it years earlier in trade for labor and produce from her garden. The Rasey's collection sold in the 1980s at Garth's Auctions where it was acquired by Karen Graves (Kentucky), and from her it sold to Jeff Dickeson (Ohio), and thence to the current owner. Dickeson later acquired a blanket chest that had the same paint decoration and also had a collection history in central Michigan. Provenance: From the Lifetime Collection of a Northeast Ohio Dealer.
Condition: Paint, tins, and hinges are original, porcelain pulls are period and probably original; the top board has paint loss and cupping; the horiztonal board under the doors has been replaced with old wood.
