CLYDE SINGER (OHIO, 1908-1999), BEATEN BALL CLUB - Oil on canvas, signed lower left and dated 1949, and titled on the back. View of ballplayers in the dugout. 28” high, 22” wide (canvas), 32.5” high, 25.5” wide (framed). On the back is the date 1939 scratched out, and on the stretcher is inscribed ”The Coal Trucker.” It may be that this work was painted over an earlier painting, something Singer is known to have done. This may also explain the craquelure that the surface paint has experienced. This work was exhibited in ”Clyde Singer's America” at the Canton Museum of Art, 2008-2009, and is illustrated as figure 94 in the exhibition catalog by M.J. Albacete. From the collection of Pete Slates, Carrollton, Ohio. Pete’s paternal aunt was Peg Cranston. Peg and her husband Jack were very good friends with Clyde Singer. Jack Cranston obtained many paintings directly from Clyde Singer. Pete Slates purchased most of his Clyde Singer paintings (including all featured in this auction) from Jack Cranston. Condition: Canvas is a bit loose on the stretcher, and the paint has some craquelure.
