RABBI MEIR PERLES, RABBI OF NAGYKAROLY. HANDWRITTEN SIGNED LETTER ADDRESSED TO RABBI MOSHE SHICK – THE MAHARAM SCHICK, OPPOSING THE RABBINICAL SEMINARY ESTABLISHED IN HUNGARY. Letter dated 1869, attacking the reformists in Hungary for their opposition to the country’s great rabbinical leaders, and stating that it is essential for the orthodox to present their case before the government authorities, in order to bring an end to the seminary established by the reformers. He mentions having written to Reb Yitzchak Reich, asking him to call an assembly of the Rabbis of Ujhely, Ungvar, Szollos and Huszt. Rare two-page letter on this controversy. Rabbi Meir Perles (1811- 1894), son of Rabbi Yitzchak Moshe of Eisenstadt and son-in-law of Rabbi Yaakov Yitzchak Frankel of Nagykaroly, whom he succeeded in 1834. A renowned gaon and leading Hungarian rabbinical figure. Rabbi Moshe Schick (1807-1879), one of the greatest disciples of the Chassam Sofer and famous Hungarian Rabbi, Rosh Yeshiva and leading halachic authority. Rabbinic leader of Hungarian orthodox Jewry, Rabbi of Yergen (Szentgyorgy) and Huszt, and author of over 1000 halachic responsa published in Shaalos Uteshuvos Maharam Schick, and of other works. 2 sides. 22.5 x 28.5 cm.
