RABBI YAAKOV DAVID VILAVSKY – ‘THE RIDVAZ’, LETTER TO R. YAAKOV GORDON. Letter written by the gaon Rabbi Yaakov David Vilavsky – known as ‘the Ridvaz’, while in Manchester, England, raising funds for his Yeshiva in Tzefas. R. Yaakov Gordon lived in Manchester at the time and the Ridvaz expresses surprise that he has not come to see him or contribute to the Yeshiva. Rabbi Yaakov David Vilavsky (1845-1913) was born in Kobrin and was renowned from a young age as an infant prodigy. At the age of 23 he was appointed Rabbi of Izbalin, from where he was appointed Darshan in Vilna and subsequently Rabbi of Bobroisk, Polotzk, Vilkovisk, Slutzk and Chicago. Renowned as an outstanding and outspoken rabbinic scholar. In 1905 he settled in Eretz Yisrael and established a Yeshiva in Tzefas. Author of many rabbinic works, most famous of which is his commentary on the Talmud Yerushalmi. Postcard. Very good condition.
