RABBI SHMUEL ROSENBERG, RABBI OF HUNCOVCE (UNSDORF), SHARPLY WORDED LETTER AGAINST LOCATING THE BIMA AT THE SIDE OF THE SYNAGOGUE AND STATING THAT IT IS FORBIDDEN TO PRAY IN SUCH A SYNAGOGUE. ADRESSED TO RABBI ASHER LEMEL SPITZER, A DISCIPLE OF THE WRITER. Letter dated 1906. The letter is addressed to Rabbi Asher Lemel Spitzer, who served at the time as Rabbi of the Chevra Shas in Papa, but was unable to support his family on his meagre salary. He had been offered the position of Rabbi of the town, on condition that he would agree to pray at the main synagogue, which had been built by Leopold Loewe in accordance with the reformist tendencies of some members, with the Bima located at the side of the synagogue. The Rabbi of Unsdorf strongly warns his disciple against agreeing to the proposal and reports that his teacher, the Ksav Sofer, had refused to enter a synagogue built in that style and had rebuked the rabbi of the town, who preached there.
