Hamburg, Pennsylvania Girlhood Needlework House Sampler, Dated 1827 - A Pennsylvania Girlhood Silk on Linen Pictorial Needlework House Sampler, Dated 1827. Wrought by Mary Martha Scott, Hamburg, Berks County. The upper half decorated with floral and tendril motifs, with four lines of text to the center inscribed, ”My gracious God how plain / Are thy directions given / O may I never read in vain / But find the path to heaven”. Centered by a three dimensional two-story house with end chimneys, flanked by pine trees. The inscription panel above inscribed, ”Mary Martha Scott / her sampler work'd / in the 12 Year of / her Age, Hamburg / February 12, 1827”. In a modern carved giltwood frame. Dimensions: Sight 15 1/2 x 17in; Frame 18 3/4 x 20 1/4in. Provenance: Property from a Bucks County, Pennsylvania Collection. Condition: Framed and glazed. Not examined out of frame. Significant fading to embroidery, especially to text. General discoloration commensurate with age.
