Takahashi Hiroaki (Japanese, 1871-1945), Woodcut on Paper, Sudden Shower at Takaido - Takahashi Hiroaki (Shotei) woodcut on crepe paper known as chirimen-e, titled Sudden Shower at Takaido. The composition depicts travelers and porters caught in a sudden torrential rainstorm at the Takaido pass, with figures hurrying for shelter near a large tree and a thatched-roof structure. The print utilizes the chirimen-gami technique, a process where the finished woodblock print is mechanically compressed to create a highly textured, cloth-like surface.
