Japanese Calligraphy Ink on Paper Hanging Scroll - Japanese hanging scroll, or kakejiku, featuring calligraphy in ink on paper. The central text is executed in a fluid cursive grass script, or sosho, likely representing a poem or Buddhist verse. The work is presented in a three-part patterned silk mount, or sandan-hyoso, with a blue-on-grey wave patterned main body and narrow floral-patterned ichimonji bands framing the calligraphy. The scroll is finished with bone or similar light-colored hard material scroll ends, known as jiku-saki, and includes decorative hanging strips, or futai, at the top. A stylized cursive signature is present in the final left-hand column, which is not legible as a name. A single square red seal is applied at the bottom left of the calligraphy; it contains four characters in seal script within a square border, with the top-right character resembling ta, while the remaining characters are not legible.
