A Lancaster and Sandland Sandland Ware Dickens Ware Covered Butter Dish - A vintage two-piece glazed earthenware covered butter or cheese dish manufactured by Lancaster and Sandland Ltd. in Hanley, England. Part of the maker's Sandland Ware line, the set consists of a rectangular dome lid with a molded handle and a coordinating scalloped-edge underplate, both featuring a lobed or fluted body. The lid is decorated with a multi-color transfer-printed scene titled Micawber Introduces David to London, featuring characters from Charles Dickens' David Copperfield. The edges of both the lid and the plate are finished with a gold-tone gilded rim. The underside of the plate bears a green transfer-printed maker's mark showing two shaking hands below the words Sandland Ware and above Lancaster and Sandland Ltd, Hanley, England. This item features provenance labels from the Rubin Collection, with silver-tone circular stickers present on both the interior of the lid and the base of the plate.
