Wedgwood of Etruria & Barlaston by James Buttersworth Framed Nautical Porcelain Tile, The - Wedgwood polychrome transfer-decorated porcelain plaque after the original marine painting by James E. Buttersworth (Anglo-American, 1817-1894). The scene depicts the American clipper ship Dreadnought under full sail on a dark, choppy sea, prominently featuring the red cross emblem of the Red Cross Packet line on the main topsail. The plaque is mounted in a burl maple veneer frame with a gilt inner cove and a brass identification plaque on the bottom rail. The reverse is finished with a wood panel inset with an informative oval porcelain label bearing the Wedgwood of Etruria and Barlaston factory mark. The label provides historical text regarding the ship's service between New York and Liverpool and its eventual wreck off Tierra del Fuego in 1869, noting the reproduction was made with permission from the Peabody Museum in Salem, Massachusetts.
