Neat or on the Rocks - Four of Scotland’s distilling regions are represented in this collection of single malt scotch whiskies and fine accouterments. Glen Kinchie. From the Lowlands, this 12-Year-Old shows off the characteristic lightness and grassy elements that Lowland whiskies are known for, with nods to cooked fruit and Sauternes wine along the way. It was described by a displaced Scottish bartender in London as “mother’s milk.” It is a brilliant single malt to enjoy as an aperitif on a warm evening. Oban. The Highlands are represented by this 14-Year-Old whisky that delivers a smoky, creamy palate with notes of marmalade, toffee apples, and pear cider. A development of cloves comes late to the palate as it lingers long with a malty finish and flavors of toasty oak and spice. It is a personal favorite of Pope Francis, who jokingly declared it to be “‘the real holy water.” Glenlivet Cognac Cask Collection. The northern Speyside region is whisky heaven, with over half of Scotland’s distilleries calling it home. It is well represented by this 14-Year-Old favorite aged in a combination of ex-bourbon and ex-sherry casks before being aged in cognac casks for 6 months. It is rich and nutty with a distinct brandy note, mildly sweet malt, a haze of barrel char, and a slight hint of green apple and green grape. Laphroaig. The Islay region is home to the strongest flavored of all Scotch whiskies. They are renowned for their strong peaty smokiness, which comes from the peat fuel they use for malting the barley. This 10 Year Old opens on big, smoky muscular peat notes. There are spices and licorice, as well as a big dose of salt. It lingers on the palate with a hint of vanilla ice cream followed by an upsurge of spices, including cardamom, black pepper, and chilies. Accompanying these excellent selections are several items that will help you enjoy your nights of gentle sipping, either neat or on the rocks. A set of nine Chill Rocks whisky stones, a Chillz Ice Ball Maker, and a set of four Mikasa crystal glasses. Delectable delights include shortbread finger cookies and four assorted flavors of pistachios. Rounding off the basket is a Manly Indulgence candle with fragrant notes of raw coconut, mandarin leaf, and rustic oud to set the mood.
