R. Ezriel Hildesheimer/ Lachmei Todah. First Edition. Offenbach 1816. - Halachic novella and derashos by R. Tzvi Hirsch Ha’Levy Horowitz, son of the Ba’al Haflo’ah. This Sefer is the second part of the work Machne Levi, which was published at the end of the Sefer Ha’Makneh by the Haflo’ah. With the stamp and bookplate of R. Ezriel Hildesheimer. R. Tzvi Hirsch Ha’Levy Horowitz (1730-1817), was the son of R. Pinchos Horowitz (the Haflo’ah) Rebbe of the Chasam Sofer. With the appointment of the Haflo’ah as Rav of Frankfurt, R. Tzvi Hirsch stood at the helm of the local Yeshiva and was known for his penetrating shiurim. In his work Lachmei Todah, he writes of the state of spiritual decline of the city and of his battles against the Reform Movement who sought to move Shabbos observance to Sunday, to the extent that he had trouble finding a minyan in his Shul. R. Ezriel Hildesheimer (1820-1899), was a student of the Aruch L’Ner and Chacham Yitzchok Bernays of Hamburg and was one the leading Torah authorities of his generation. From 1851 to 1869, he served as Rav of Eisenstadt, where he established a prestigious Yeshiva. In 1869, he was appointed as Rav of Berlin, where in addition to his rabbinical duties, he established the Beis Midrash L’Rabbonim, commonly known as “The Hildesheimer Rabbinical Seminary”, where many of the German Rabbonim up until the Holocaust studied.
