ANGLO JUDAICA. First Edition. London 1875. With the extremely rare response! London 1876. - Published in honor of Montefiore’s seventh visit to Jerusalem, with letters written by R. Meir Auerbach and R. Shmuel Salant. With an additional lengthy narrative written by Montefiore entitled: Diary of His Sojourn in the Holy Land. Hebrew and English. With photograph of Montefiore in cover. Wertheimer press. 148, 40 pages. 24.5 cm. Fine condition, original binding, slight wear to spine. Some pages slightly loose. Gilt edged pages. Lot includes a response to the open letter, issued by the Sephardic community of Jerusalem. Extremely rare and seemingly unrecorded. With correspondence between Samuel Montagu and the leaders of the Sephardic community. Apparently, there was some contention between the leaders of the Ashkenazic and Sephardic communities in Jerusalem, with regard to Montefiore’s visit. The Sephardim maintained that Dr. Lowe (Montefiore’s assistant) was more sympathetic to the needs of the Ashkenazim then to those of the Sephardim. As such they appealed to Samuel Montagu, who was also an extremely influential philanthropist in London. This rare pamphlet contains correspondence between Samuel Montagu and the rabbinical leaders of the Sephardim in Jerusalem, and strongly contests some of the findings of Montefiore’s report. 14 pages. 21 cm. Fine condition. Opening bid $350
