Hagadah New York 1886. With Unusual “American” Illustrations. Fine copy. - Interesting Pesach Haggadah with illustrations, an English translation, a commentary to Chad Gadya and Echod Mi Yodea, as well as the laws of Bedikas Chametz and Kashering, by R. Yerucham Tzvi Kantrowitz. The illustrations, (which originally appeared in the 1879 Chicago edition) are considered by bibliographers to be the first Haggadah illustrations reflecting American influence. In depiction of the four sons, the father and the “wise son” are dressed in traditional Jewish clothing, whilst the “wicked son” is wearing a fashionable smoking jacket and is smoking a cigarette. An illustration of the pyramids reflects the architecture and engineering of contemporary urban America; the pyramids have flat tops and columns and the slaves are using pulleys. Goldman 141.
