With rare controversial title page of illustrations! Mantua 1722 - Shulchan Aruch Orach Chaim, with the commentary of R. Yoseph Ben Ephraim Gur Aryeh Ha’Levy. R. Yoseph Ben Ephraim Gur Aryeh was a renowned Talmid Chochom in Matuna, where he was appointed Dayan in 1665. He corresponded regularly with R. Shmuel Abuav and many of the responsa in “Dvar Shmuel” are written to him. He also corresponded with R. Moshe Zacuto (Ra’MaZ). In addition to being a famous Posek, he was a great Kabbalist, as the CHIDA, in Shem HaGedolim states, that R. Gur Aryeh was able to hear the ‘Angel’ (Maggid) who taught Torah to the Ra’MaZ. Variant Edition. This volume of Orach Chaim has the rare original title page with supposed depictions of Rashi, the RaMBaM, the MaHaRIL, the Ma’HarIK, the Rema, and R. Gur Aryeh. Reputedly, the Rabbonim of Mantua ordered the destruction of the original title page, following a dispute concerning the attempt to create portraits of these great luminaries.
