Minchas Chinuch. First Rare Edition. Lemberg 1869. Published anonymously. Incomplete Copy. - Classic sefer authored by R. Yosef Babad as a commentary to Sefer Ha’Chinuch. Published anonymously, it quickly became enormously popular and remains one of the most frequently learned Sifrei Achronim. R. Yosef Babad (1801-1874), was born into a rabbinical family and was renowned from a young age as a brilliant Talmid Chochom. He was a student of R. Shimon of Yaroslov, R. Dovid of Zavlotov (later his father-in-law) and particularly of R. Naftali of Ropchitz, whom he referred to as his Rebbe. He subsequently married to the daughter of R. Aryeh Leibish Halberstam of Tarnigrod, and for a while studied with his brother-in-law, R. Chaim Halberstam of Tzanz (the Divrei Chaim). He served as Rav in various communities, most notably Tarnapol, and was thus known as the Tarnapoler Rav. Held in the greatest esteem by the great Torah leaders, his magnum opus Minchas Chinuch received almost unprecedented acclaim. The title page of this first edition of the Minchas Chinuch, which was published anonymously during the lifetime of author, states: “Written by one of the holy Torah geniuses of our times, who omitted his name owing to his great humility… published through the efforts of R. Reuven Cohen Rappaport”. Only in the second edition (Lemberg 1889), 15 years after the author’s death, was his identity revealed by the publisher. Stefansky Hebrew Classics 217. Salat press.
