R. Meir Ashkenazi. Chabad. Shanghai! 1937. Rare. - Rare autograph letter by R. Meir Ashkenazi to R. Yosef Gurwitz of Melbourne, Australia, regarding various important issues facing the community of Shanghai. R. Meir Ashkenazi (1891- 1954), was born in Tzrikov and studied in the Tomchei Temimim Yeshiva in Lubavitch. He served as Rav in Vladivostok and in 1926, was offered a rabbinical position in Boston, Massachusetts, which he accepted. En route to Boston he travelled via Shanghai, and for various reasons he was forced to stay there. While in Shanghai, he established a branch of the Tomchei Temimim Yeshiva and was instrumental in assisting the hundreds of Yeshiva students who were in Shanghai during the War, including the Mirrer and Chachmei Lublin Yeshivos. In 1949, R. Meir relocated to Crown Heights, where he was involved in various aspects of the Chabad organization. 27.5 by 21 cm. Very fine condition. Opening bid $200
