An address by Rev Morais delivered on the feast of Pentecost. Philadelphia 1869. - Important sermon delivered by Rev Sabato Morais at Congregation “Mickve Israel” on the ninth anniversary of the consecration of the Synagogue building. Congregation Mikveh Israel in Philadelphia traces its history to 1740. It is the oldest synagogue in Philadelphia, and among the oldest in the United States. It had various notable leaders over the years including the renowned Rev Isaac Leeser. In this sermon, Rev Morais laments at length the dismal state of Orthodoxy prevalent in America and explains to the congregants how although bowing to the pressure of those who wish to “innovate Judaism” may initially swell the numbers of members, ultimately this will be self-destructing.
