R' Shmaryahu Yosef Chaim Kanievsky (1928-2022) was recognized as the undisputed 'Gadol Hador'. Born in Pinsk to his father R' Yaakov Yisrael Kanievsky, (Steipler Gaon) and his mother the sister of R' Avraham Yeshayahu Karelitz, the Chazon Ish. In 1934, the family emigrated to Eretz Yisrael and settled in Bnei Brak. In 1951 he married the daughter of R' Yosef Shalom Eliyashiv. R. Chaim was famed for his extreme diligence in Torah study and his unrivalled knowledge of every area of Torah scholarship. He authored many works, in particular, his seforim on Rambam Zera’im, Derech Emunah. In his later years, his home became a magnet for many seeking guidance and blessings.
