MA'ASEH RAV. LONDON 1707. RARE! - MA’ASEH RAV. LONDON 1707. RARE! Rare polemic regarding a “get” (divorce bill) issued R. Aaron Hart, Rabbi of The Great Synagogue in London. The husband Anshel Katz of London wished to travel to The West Indies due to financial problems and sought to divorce his wife with a conditional divorce in the event he would not be heard of again. A learned and wealthy member of the London community R. Marcus Hamburger (son in law of Gluckel of Hameln) criticized the divorce claiming it was not halachically sanctioned. R. Hart responded by placing R. Hamburger in Cherem (excommunication) based upon a ruling of Rabbeinu Tam (Takanos Shu”M) forbidding anyone to contest a “get” after its issue by Bais Din. R. Hamburger turned to various great rabbinical leaders of the time including the Chacham Tzvi (see page 5) protesting the cherem. This sefer published by R. Yochanan of Hollischau contains halachic responsa in favor of R. Hamburger and was intended as a response to the sefer Urim V’Tumim by R. Hart defending his position. Eventually R. Hamburger founded his own synagogue known as The Hambro Synagogue. Ironically, in 1936 after almost 230 years The Hambro Synagogue merged with The Great Synagogue. This sefer is particularly rare as apparently R. Yehuda Leib Kalish of Amsterdam maintained that as part of the “Cherem” the sefer Ma’aseh Rav must be burned (See Responsa Nishal Dovid Vol 3 #8). 1, 13 pages. 19 cm. Overall fine condition, closely shaved affecting some headers, some small tears slightly affecting text. Modern binding.
