Yosef Karo (1458-1535), lived in Toledo where he led a great Yeshiva. Several years before the Spanish Expulsion in 1492, he moved his Yeshiva to Portugal, but following the subsequent expulsion of the Jews from Portugal, he fled to Turkey where he served on the Rabbinate of Constantinople.
