R. Shmuel (Schmelke) HaLevy Horwitz of Nikolsburg (1726-1778), was the oldest son of R. Tzvi Hirsch of Chortkov who was able to trace his Yichus to Shmuel HaNavi. In their youth, he and his brother R. Pinchos (the Ba’al Haflo’ah) travelled to Mezritch and became close Chassidim of R. Dov Ber of Mezritch (Mezritcher Maggid). World famous as a tremendous Talmid Chochom and Tzaddik, he served as Rov in Shinniva, and in 1773 was appointed as Rov of Nikolsburg. His talmidim include R. Levi Yitzchok of Berditchev, the Chozeh of Lublin, R. Menachem Mendel of Rimanov, R. Mordechai Banet, R. Moshe Leib of Sassov and his son-in-law R. Baruch of Kaliv.
