Manificent handmade illustrated Mizrach sign. New York circa 1880
Magnificent Handmade illustrated “Mizrach” sign for a synagogue. New York. Circa 1880.

Written in black ink; illustrated ink and gouache on paper.

In many communities an illustrated sign, known as a “Mizrach”, was traditionally hung on the eastern wall of a synagogue. Since Biblical times, Jews have customarily prayed in the direction of Jerusalem and the Holy Temple.

Handmade by Ze'ev Wolf Wachsman and dedicated to the memory of his parents who passed away in 1871 and 1878. Wachsman was born in Poland in 1845 and emigrated to America in 1873. Depicting Moshe, Aaron, traditional lions and various verses and quotes from biblical sources.

29.5 by 23.5 inches. 20th Century wooden frame (37.5 by 31 Inches). Glazed.
