MASECHES SHABBOS. VILNA 1836 WITH THE POLEMIC “DIVREI EMES V”TZEDECK” REGARDING THE SLAVITTA/VILNA SHAS DISPUTE. - MASECHES SHABBOS. VILNA 1836 WITH THE POLEMIC “DIVREI EMES V”TZEDECK” REGARDING THE SLAVITTA/VILNA SHAS DISPUTE. Maseches Shabbos of the famed Vilna Shas. At the beginning of the volume is a rare polemic “Divrei Emes V”Tzedeck” regarding the famous dispute between the publishers of The Slavitta Shas (Schapira press) and the publishers of the Vilna Shas (Romm Press). In 1827, the Schapira family of the famed Slavitta press began printing a magnificent edition of The Talmud. As was customary at that time, they received a rabbinical ban against other publishing houses printing the Talmud for fifteen years. The Slavitta Shas was successfully received and was completely sold out before fifteen years. As such, the Romm Press in Vilna began printing a new edition of The Talmud. A fierce rabbinical debate ensued, involving tens of great Rabbonim as to whether the original rabbinical ban was still in place. This polemic includes a particularly sharp letter from R. Akiva Eiger, as well as letters from The Chasam Sofer, R. Abele of Vilna, The Yeshuos Yaakov, The Chemdas Shlomo, The Mishkenos Yaakov and many others. Romm press.
