Shabsi Be’er was a student of R. Yitzchok Brachia of Pano as well as R. Zecharia of Modena (Ma’aver Yabok). He immigrated to Eretz Yisroel and later served an emissary (SHaDaR) on behalf of the impoverished community in Eretz Yisroel. With a number of well-known polemical responsa including Responsum 29 regarding continuing to recite Kinnos ”after we have heard of the supposed imminent arrival of the Messiah” (referring to Shabtai Tzvi) Responsum 70 regarding Kabbalistic implications of cutting one’s beard and Responsum 109 regarding Gentile wine. R. Dov Aryeh Ritter (1855-1936), served as Chief Rabbi of Rotterdam. Known as a prominent Talmid Chochom, he was the first to publicly proclaim the “Yerushalmi Kodshim” as a forgery.
