Sefer Ha'Gilgulim. First edition. First printed sefer of R. Chaim Vital. Frankfurt 1684. - Kabbalistic work on the “Transmigration of the Soul”, by R. Chaim Vital. In this work R. Chaim Vital expounds on the teachings of the Arizal that every soul must migrate through other bodies in order to rid itself of particles of evil. Originally the Rabbonim of Frankfurt opposed the publication of this work due to the Shabtai Tzvi movement which was then rampant and they were fearful of charlatans who claimed to be reincarnations of Shabtai Tzvi. Consequently, the editor, R. Dovid Grunhut, a renowned Kabbalist and scholar in his own right, commissioned a Gentile printer to print the sefer. (See M. Waxman vol. 2 pp. 417-18.)
