Yosef Shlomo Kahaneman. Yeshivas Ponevezh. Johannesburg 1927. ר’ יוסף שלמה כהנמן. ישיבת פונובז’. יוהנסבורג תרפ”ז (1927). - Share certificate and document of transfer of shares or stock of Ponevezh Yeshiva Proprietary Limited, dated 1927, Johannesburg, South Africa. These documents certify ownership of shares in ventures of the Ponevezh Yeshiva, which was part of a commercial venture through which the Yeshiva would obtain funds earned with various business ventures in South Africa. This was the innovation of R. Y. S. Kahaneman which successfully bore fruit in the years that followed. After narrow escaping the Nazis and immigrating to Eretz Yisroel in the early days of WWII, R. Kahaneman wished to reestablish his Yeshiva in Bnei Brak. Fortuitously as these holdings were in South Africa, then a British Colony, he was able to transfer these funds even under wartime conditions, to Palestine which was then under the British Mandate. These monies then served as the seed money for the Ponevezh Yeshiva in Bnei Brak. Two documents. Share certificate in Hebrew and English. Excellent condition. Opening bid $500
