Shamshon Refoel Hirsch. 1857 ר’ שמשון רפאל הירש. תרי”ז (1857) - Lengthy autograph letter in “Yiddish Deutch” to his wife and children. Written during the summer months while Rav Hirsch was away from home. He writes that the place at which he is staying is pleasant, he has met various people and he hopes to return in about two weeks. He hopes that in the meantime his wife was successful in finding good domestic help. With an instruction to his children that they should listen to their mother, and that their focus should be on bringing her nachas. Additional addendum to his son Marcus, regarding a certain a book he was planning to buy, that it would be prudent to borrow it first in order to see if it is worth buying. R. Shimshon Refoel Hirsch (1808 –1888) was a disciple of Chacham Isaac Bernays and R. Yaakov Ettlinger (Aruch L’Ner). Known as an outstanding Talmid Chochom, he served as Rav in various communities in Germany most notably Frankfurt. He battled mightily and incessantly against the reform movement and under his devoted leadership the Orthodox Jewish community in Germany and in Frankfurt in particular blossomed. Founder of the “Torah im Derech Eretz” philosophy, his contribution to Torah-true Judaism is immeasurable. 22.5 by 28 cm. Two and half sides. Fine condition. Small hole in third side affecting text.
