CLASSICS. SIDREI TAHAROS -THE “TALMUD” COMPILED BY THE RADZINER REBBE. BOTH VOLUMES. FIRST EDITIONS. JÓZEFÓW 1873-PIETRIKOW 1903. WITH THE MAP OF ERETZ YISROEL. - Classic commentary to Masechtos Kelim and Ohalos, by R. Gershon Chanoch Henoch Leiner of Radzin (Ba’al Ha’Tcheiles). This Sefer is an original, comprehensive and brilliant work on Maseches Kelim and Maseches Ohalos. As there is neither a Talmud Bavli nor Talmud Yerushalmi to these Masechtos, the author compiled a style of “Gemora”. The center of the page is occupied by the text of the Mishnah, and is followed by all the teachings of the Gemora and Midrashim pertaining to that Mishnah. That text is flanked by two commentaries from the author, one lengthy and one brief. The lengthy commentary is a discussion of the opinions of the Rishonim and Achronim on the topic, and the brief commentary is a concise explanation of the words. This Sefer sparked a great controversy. Some of the Rabbonim of Vilna published a statement opposing the work, as a matter of principle, concerned that a composition so closely resembling the Gemora might eventually be mistaken as an integral part of the Talmud. At the same time, the work earned the approbations of many of the leading Torah scholars of the generation, including R. Yosef Shaul Natansohn, R. Shimon Sofer, R. Chaim Berlin and R. Chaim Elozor Wachs (Nefesh Chaya). Due to the opposition to the Sefer, the heading “Sefer Sidrei Taharos” was added to subsequent parts of the series at the top of each page, with a notice at the foot of each page that the work is “compiled from the teachings of the Tana’im and Amora’im”.
