UNIDENTIFIED GLOSSES! - Likutei Amarim-Tanya, by the Alter Rebbe. With the first edition of the Igeres HaTeshuvah. This edition is the second printing of the Tanya and was printed during the lifetime of The Alter Rebbe. In Chabad, the Tanya is sometimes referred to as “Torah Sh’biksav” as it is the first Sefer of Chasidic thought authored by its originator, in contrast to the teachings of the Ba’al Shem Tov and the Maggid of Mezritch, whose words were transcribed by their disciples. In the words of R. Levi Yitzchok of Berditchev “It is a wonder that R. Shneur Zalman of Liadi has managed to put such a great G-d into such a small sefer”. The publisher R. Yaakov of Brod writes at the end of the sefer that he was asked repeatedly to undertake the printing of a new edition, since the sefer was not available in his country (Galicia-Poland), due to the prohibition to export the book from Russia, where it was originally published. The following statement appears before Igeres HaTeshuvah (p. 67a): “a precious gem was in my possession from the scholarly author, a manuscript booklet pertaining to repentance, and for the benefit of the public I have brought it to print”. On the title page there is a signature “Meshulam Reich” seemingly the son in law of R. Boruch Sholom Schneerson who was the eldest son of the Tzemach Tzedeck.
