This work is one of the most basic and monumental works of responsa and is frequently quoted by many of the later Achronim. R. Aryeh Leib Ginsberg (1695-1785), served as Rav in Volozhin. Among his students from that period were R. Chaim of Volozhin (1749-1821), and R. Refoel Hamburger. While in Volozhin he published his monumental work Shaagas Aryeh. After a dispute with a local landowner he was forced to leave. At the age of 70, he was appointed Rav in Metz where he served until his passing at the age of 90. Stefansky Hebrew Classics 320.
