R. Yosef Chaim Zonnenfeld. Marriage Certificate of R. Yitzchok Yeruchum Diskin. Yerusholayim 1924.
Marriage certificate of R. Yitzchok Yeruchum Diskin, son of the “Saraf” R. Yehoshua Leib Diskin, signed by R. Yosef Chaim Zonnenfeld, who officiated at the wedding. This is of particular interest as both R. Diskin and R. Yosef Chaim were among the senior Rabbonim of the Eidah HaCharedis.
R. Yosef Chaim Zonnenfeld (1849-1932), was a talmid of both the K’sav Sofer and R. Avrohom Sha’ag. In 1873, he emigrated to Yerusholayim together with R. Avrohom Sha’ag and he quickly became recognized as one of the city’s leading Torah scholars. When the MaHaRIL Diskin emigrated to Yerusholayim in 1879, R. Yosef Chaim became his close talmid, eventually serving as a member of his Beis Din. He also assisted the MaHaRIL Diskin in the struggle against the Christian missionaries as well as in his fight against the Haskalah movement, which threatened the Old Yishuv. Aside from being considered the spiritual leader of Charedi Jewry in Eretz Yisroel, he was also renowned for his piety and holiness, as he was extremely active in Chesed activities and public matters. With the establishment of the Eidah HaCharedis, he was prevailed upon to accept the position of Rov of Yerusholayim and was honored with the title “Moroh D’Arah Yisroel”.
