R. Yosef Dov HaLevi Soloveitchik. Boston 1948. Fascinating letter.
Interesting autograph letter by R. Yosef Dov HaLevi Soloveitchik to R. Moshe Leiter, stating that while he appreciates the praise for the articles in the “Morgen Journal” he was not the author of the articles, and the one who deserves the praise is the anonymous author of the articles.
R. Yosef Dov HaLevi Soloveitchik (1903-1993), was born in Pruzhana to his father R. Moshe, son of R. Chaim Brisker. He grew up in the town of Chaslovitch, where his father was Rav and studied primarily under his father. He also studied Maseches Brochos together with his grandfather R. Chaim. From a young age he was known as an Illui. At the age of 22, he began studying philosophy and other topics in the University of Berlin. In 1932, he immigrated to the United States, serving as a Rav in Boston until his passing. In addition to being active in Kashrus in Boston, “the Rav”, as he was known, established the Maimonides School, which was revolutionary in its time. In 1939, he established a European-style Yeshiva called Heichal Rabbeinu Chaim HaLevi, where he was later joined by R. Michel Feinstein. Following the passing of his father in 1941, R. Yosef Dov succeeded him as Rosh Yeshivas Rabbeinu Yitzchok Elchonon, which he led until his passing.
