Pnei Aryeh. Historic Responsa to Haym Solomon! First Edition. Amsterdam 1790. Fine Copy. - Halachic responsa by R. Aryeh Leib Breslauer (1741-1809), the Chief Rabbi of Rotterdam. In responsa 41& 42, he responds to Gimpel Wolfenbitel of Amsterdam concerning a donation made by “R. Chaim of Philadelphia”. It seems R. Breslauer recommended to Haym Solomon that he contribute to the welfare of a needy individual in Amsterdam. Haym Solomon obliged and sent a sum to Wolfenbitel on behalf of the needy man. However, in the interim, the recipients’ finances improved and Wolfenbitel questioned R. Breslau whether he should therefore return the funds to Haym Solomon. It is of particular interest to find Halachic queries as early as 1790 regarding Jews in America, particularly with mention of an important personage as Haym Solomon. Haym Solomon (1740-1785), was a Polish-born Jewish businessman and political financial broker who was active in the founding of the Jewish community in Philadelphia.
