Chaim Heller (1879-1960), grew up in Warsaw and was known from a young age as the “Ilui of Warsaw”. He was a close associate of R. Chaim Soloveitchik, R. Eliyohu Chaim Meisel and R. Eliyohu Feinstein (Pruzhana), all of whom held him in great esteem. After serving for a short period as Rov of Lomza, he relocated to Berlin where he founded a Yeshiva only for those with a broad knowledge of Shas and Poskim. Following the rise of Nazism, he escaped to New York serving on the faculty of Yeshivas Rabbeinu Yitzchak Elchonon. R. Yosef Dov (Ber) Soloveitchik who considered himself a student of R. Chaim Heller, once remarked that “R. Chaim Heller was the greatest Gaon to step foot in the Western Hemisphere”.
