Rare work on Gittin and Chalitzah, including the correct spelling of American names, by R. Aaron Gordon of New York. Includes 2 responsa by the Aruch HaShulchan, as well as a diagram of a Chalitzah shoe.
The mass immigration of hundreds of thousands of Jews from Europe to the United States resulted in many new Halachic queries particularly in the field of Gittin where it is imperative that all names and nicknames be spelled correctly. This is the earliest work on the orthography of American names in Gittin.
R. Aaron Gordon (1845-1922), was born in Miadziol (a suburb of Vilna) and was known as the “Miadziol Ilui”. He received rabbinical ordination from R. Shlomo Ha’Cohen of Vilna and R. Moshe Danishevsky of Slabodka. In 1890, he immigrated to New York where he served as a Rav, and was an early and particularly active member of the Agudas HaRabbonim.
