For hundreds of years, the etiquette of rabbinical correspondence, mandated poetic expressions often alluding to various verses in Scripture and quotes from Talmudic texts. For this purpose Schriftschtelle were used, to assist both, as a reference tool to important halachic responsa and contemporary events, as well as the appropriate salutations by which to address the rabbinical and community leaders. Containing much important correspondence, including letters relating to some previously unknown important communal events. Seemingly from the region of Altona and other important German communities of that era. Spanning the gamut of Jewish communal life including electing and appointing rabbinical figures, issues concerning matrimony, civil laws etc. R. Shimshon Refoel Hirsch (1808 –1888) was a disciple of Chacham Isaac Bernays and R. Yaakov Ettlinger (Aruch L’Ner). Known as an outstanding Talmid Chochom, he served as Rav in various communities in Germany most notably Frankfurt. He battled mightily and incessantly against the reform movement and under his devoted leadership the Jewish community in Germany and in Frankfurt in particular blossomed. Founder of the “Torah im Derech Eretz” philosophy, his contribution to Torah true Judaism is immeasurable. On the flyleaf there appears a stamp with initials “SRH” indicating that this was, as Rav Hirsch’s personal copy. Undated, seemingly early Eighteenth century.
