Eidah Ha’Chareidis/ Menachem Begin - Eidah Ha’Chareidis/ Menachem Begin. Signed letter dated 1982, by Menachem Begin (1913-1992) sixth Prime Minister of Israel, written to R. Y.Y. Weiss (Minchas Yitzchok). Written as a response to an urgent telegram sent by the rabbinical leaders of the Eidah under the leadership of R. Weiss, including R. Freund, R. Fischer, R. Dushinsky, R. Rabinowitz and R. Horowitz. Regarding an archaeological dig causing the destruction of Jewish graves. The Eidah Ha’Chareidis was founded in 1921 by devout Ashkenazi residents of Jerusalem of the Old Yishuv, who refused to be affiliated in any way with the Zionist leadership. As a general rule the leadership of the Eidah shied away from official contact with the government and protested strongly against the religious parties in Israel joining Begin’s coalition.
