Americana. Sifsei Tzadikim. Complete Set of Leeser Machzorim. Philadelphia 1853. Second Edition. - Complete set (not including the siddur) of 6 volumes of the famed Leeser Machzor printed in America. Includes the services for Rosh Hashanah, Yom Kippur, the Festivals and the Fast Days. According to the custom of the Spanish and Portuguese Jews. This was the second edition of the very first Machzor printed in America and was prepared for print by the famed Rev. Isaac Leeser. Although Rev. Leeser had virtually no rabbinic contemporaries in America with whom to confer, he nonetheless persevered in the task of preparing many important Hebrew texts for publication. This was in addition to the many other Rabbinic duties he undertook in his noble mission to disseminate Torah true Judaism in unfamiliar and often hostile surroundings. The printing of the Machzorim is remarkable, as historians estimate the entire Jewish population in the United States at that time at less than 15,000 souls. Vinograd Philadelphia 20. See Goldman 36.
