Chaim Benveniste (1603-1673), was born in Constantinople and in his youth studied under R. Yosef of Trani among others. He served as Rav in Tirah, near Izmir, and then in Izmir itself. His seforim were received to tremendous acclaim and the CHIDA famously recommended that these commentaries be consulted prior to rendering any halachic decision. Tzvi Hirsch Berlin-Levin (1721-1800), was a son of R. Aryeh Leib Levenstam, the famed Rav of Amsterdam and a grandson of the Chacham Tzvi. He was one of the most well- known rabbinical figures of his period and served as Rav of various distinguished communities including London (where he was known as Hart Lyon), Manheim and Berlin. His glosses on the Talmud are printed at the back of the Vilna Shas. Brother of R. Shaul of Amsterdam (Binyan Ariel) and father of R. Solomon Hirschell first Chief Rabbi of the British Empire.
