The author originated from Vladimir, Volhynia. As a result of calamities that befell his native Poland, he was forced to flee to Constantinople, while his children were tragically taken into captivity. He mentions the Khmelnitsky Uprising of 1648-9 (Tach V’Tat) and the massacres of entire Jewish communities.
