Zohar Chai. Commentary to the Zohar by R. Yitzchok Issac of Komarna. First Editions. Lemberg-Przemysl 1875-1871. Lot of three volumes. Berishis 1 (Part one only) Shmos (Part two only) Vayikra, Bamidbar & Devorim. - Commentary on the Zohar based on Kabbalah and Chassidus, by the famed R. Yitzchok Issac Safrin of Komarna. The Zohar Chai is an original and profound commentary to the Zohar, based on the fundamental teachings of the Arizal and the Baal Shem Tov. In this sefer, the author interweaves and combines Kabbalah and Chassidus. Unlike his other seforim which were printed in his lifetime, this work was printed after his passing by his son R. Eliezer Tzvi (Damesek Eliezer). The first volume was published during the year of mourning and includes a lengthy introduction by his son, extolling the greatness of his father. One of the stories he relates is that after his father authored the first four pages of this commentary, he was approached with a request that he daven for a deathly ill person. His father, who saw through his Divine Inspiration that the sick person required much Heavenly mercy to recover, told the messenger: “I have no way of helping him, but I do possess four pages which I wrote on the Zohar……, go tell this sick person that I am giving these novella on the Zohar to him as a complete gift… in this merit… perhaps he will be healed he will live for many years”. The messenger did as he was told and the invalid was healed. Further in the introduction, he relates how the Ba’al Shem Tov appeared to his father in a dream and encouraged him to continue writing this sefer, which he completed just several weeks prior to his passing. In the conclusion at the end of the final volume, his son relates that on two occasions before his passing his father made him promise to publish the Zohar Chai commentary, “and I rejoice that I have honored my pledge and fulfilled the words of my father”. R. Yitzchok Issac Yehuda Yechiel Safrin of Komarna (1806-1874), was a talmid of his uncle R. Tzvi Hirsch of Zidichoiv. He was renowned as a great Tzaddik and a tremendous Talmid Chochom.
