CLASSICS. Boruch Ta’am. First Edition. Lemberg 1841. - Talmudic novella authored by R. Boruch Frankel Thumim. Prepared for publication by his son-in-law, R. Chaim Halberstam of Tzanz (Divrei Chaim). The Divrei Chaim also added footnotes elucidating the often complex discourses, as well an introduction describing his close association with his esteemed father in law. These footnotes are the first published Torah of the Divrei Chaim. R. Boruch Frankel-Thumim (1760-1828), was known from a young age as a child prodigy with a lightning quick grasp, combined with great piety and exceptional diligence. He was a talmid of R. Meshulam Igra, and served as Rav in Vishnitza where he established a Yeshiva. From 1800, he served as Rav in Leipnik where in addition to his rabbinical duties, he led a pre-eminent Yeshiva. World famous as one of the most prominent Talmidei Chachomim of his generation, he was held in awe by his rabbinical contemporaries as well by the general public. In 1841, his Sefer Boruch Ta’am was published with the notes of the Divrei Chaim. In the introduction, the Divrei Chaim writes of the enormity of the greatness in Torah of the Boruch Ta’am and how they had learnt chavrusa for a year covering most of Shas with Rishonim. Prior to the sefer’s publication, the Chasam Sofer was requested to write an approbation. In a letter (printed in the Boruch Ta’am) the Chasam Sofer replied with astonishment that the Boruch Ta’am’s sefer should need any approbation and continued at length extolling the Boruch Ta’am’s greatness, concluding “Boruch Ta’amo U’Mishnoso”. The MaHaRaM Ash writes in his sefer “Imrei Yosher” that with the petiro of the Boruch Ta’am the era of “Ziv Ha’Chochma” had ended. Stefansky Hebrew Classics 92. Stefansky Chassidus 93.
