CLASSICS. Mateh Ephraim. First Edition. Zolkiew 1835. - Fundamental halachic sefer pertaining to the months of Elul and Tishrei by R. Ephraim Zalman Margulies of Brod. Received to enormous acclaim, the Mateh Ephraim remains enormously popular with both scholars and laymen. R. Ephraim Zalman Margulies of Brod (1761-1828), was known as one of the leading Gaonim of his generation as well as a prolific writer of many important Halachic works. He served for a while as the Rav of Uhaniv, however he resigned the position and from then on declined to serve in the Rabbinate although he was offered many prestigious positions including the Chief Rabbinate of Frankfurt. He settled in Brody and taught a select group of outstanding students. He was also well known as a wealthy man and is often used as a classic example of Torah U’Gedulah.
